Things That Go Together

This post is part of a blog hop, which is to say, you can follow the arrows at the bottom of the post to see similar posts by my teammates at Etsy Greetings Team. The challenge is to put together two things that go together for Valentine’s Day–a Valentine of your own and something else from Etsy.

Tricky assignment!

I do have four valentines in my shop, but the card that sold most recently for Valentine’s Day is this one: it just seems to be exactly the Right Thing for the Right Person, doesn’t it? It’s actually gotten a good bit of clicking over at Etsy. And it’s not too Valentiney, if you know what I mean. It seems to strike a cord with a lot of people. (And if it strikes a cord with you and you want to own it, just click it…)

It all started when I saw a bumper sticker that said “reading is sexy” on it. That got me thinking that a lot of things we don’t think are sexy really are, because they make a person more interesting, maybe more mysterious, more desirable. So sometimes surprising things are sexy, and I wanted to say that in a very non-sexy way.

And of course, I got to thinking about what IS sexy. While I was cogitating about the creation of this card, I wrote a post about it, and I got some good comments about what’s sexy. I’m pretty old school on this subject: I think Cary Grant is incredibly sexy, because, well, for starters he was incredibly handsome, but also he’s always gentlemanly and witty. And funny; I think that’s sexy too. And what about Lauren Bacall? She was amazingly sexy without ever, as far as I know, having a wardrobe malfunction. Which in my opinion is decidedly NOT sexy.

I happen to think good grammar actually IS sexy, in that Cary Grant kind of way. You certainly never heard him swear. But also he was always saying things that were clever and kind.

So I’m pairing my card with these amazing glasses from an Etsy shop called BackThennishVintage. Was it Dorothy Parker who claimed that men don’t look twice at lasses with glasses? She said a lot of things that were really true and/or really funny. But don’t you think these particular glasses are pretty doggone sexy? In that good grammar way. Debonair. Classy. Hiding just enough and revealing just enough. And if you agree with me that these are little hotties, you can click on them to make them yours.

I’d love to hear your ideas about what’s sexy. It’s sort of a continuing dialogue. And after you comment, be sure to click the arrows below to see what other delightful Valentine’s Day pairings are in store from my teammates!

  1. Such a great and fun combination! I would have to agree with your thoughts on sexy. I would also include just being smart/intelligent is sexy. It would be nice if society placed a higher value on that too.

  2. Awesome pairing! I totally agree: understated is sexy – not over-the-top, trying too hard. Ya got it or ya don’t! What I find sexy: I fell for my guy watching him handle a sail boat – confident, able, strong. I was a goner!

BTW, this morning I spent some time reading through your blog and I love it – and I have to apologize for not realizing that sooner! It’s a real pleasure to read.

  3. Katy, I LOVE this post! So witty and fun to read. And as an English teacher, I definitely think good grammar is sexy! Such a fun pairing with the glasses!
